Back to School Walk & Bike Safety

Another school year is officially underway! As students return to the classroom across Palm Beach County, we can all do our part to keep everyone safe while walking, bicycling and driving to and from school.

Be sure to slow down in school zones and keep an eye out for school buses stopping to drop off and pick up students. Review the graphic below to see when you are required to stop for a school bus and yield to students.

Many children and parents will also be walking to school in the morning or home in the afternoon. Use these tips for pedestrian safety:

  • Be alert and aware of more people in crosswalks and crossing guards directing traffic.
  • To keep everyone safe, never pull into a crosswalk at a red light or stop sign without looking to see if it is clear first.
  • You may also see flashing or blinking lights indicating a school zone or a pedestrian crossing. Always pay attention to your surroundings to see if someone is walking or bicycling in the area.
Register today for Walk & Roll to School Day!

The 28th Annual National Walk & Roll to School Day will be held on October 9, 2024. This event encourages children to be more active and promotes safe routes to walk, bike and roll to school. Last year 61 Palm Beach County schools participated in Walk & Roll to School Day, and the School District of Palm Beach County hopes to exceed that number this year! Find ideas, plan and register an event, get media attention and download shareable materials at WalkBiketoSchool.org

Be sure to also save the date for National Bike & Roll to School Day on May 7, 2025.
